Protect Yourself from Remote Access Scams

Posted November 15, 2024

We are aware of an increase in Remote Access Scams targeting local community members by impersonating trusted organizations, including financial institutions. These scammers hope to gain unauthorized access to your devices and personal information.

How the Scam Works:
  • Unsolicited Contact: You receive an unexpected call, email, or pop-up message claiming to be from a reputable company, warning of a supposed issue with your computer or account.
  • Request for Remote Access: The scammer instructs you to download software (e.g., AnyDesk, TeamViewer) to grant them remote control of your device. Or, for people with iPhones, the scammers are able to request access through a FaceTime call. Don't accept it!
  • Exploitation: Once access is granted, they may steal personal information, install malware, or make unauthorized financial transactions.
Protect Yourself:
  • Be Wary of Unexpected Communications: Legitimate companies, including Bay Federal Credit Union, will not contact you unexpectedly to request access to your devices.
  • Do Not Share Personal Information: Never provide personal or financial information in response to unexpected requests.
  • Avoid Downloading Unverified Software: Do not install software or grant remote access to your device unless you began the conversation and verified the legitimacy of the request.
  • Verify the Source: If you receive a suspicious message or call, contact the organization directly using official contact information to confirm its authenticity.
If You Suspect a Scam:
  • Disconnect Immediately: If you have granted remote access, disconnect your device from the internet.
  • Update Security Software: Run a comprehensive scan using updated security software to detect and remove any malware.
  • Change Passwords: Update your passwords, especially for sensitive accounts, and enable multi-factor authentication where possible.
  • Report the Incident: Inform Bay Federal Credit Union and relevant authorities about the scam to help protect others.
